"Enjoy living a green, organic lifestyle surrounded by forest only an hour from San Francisco"

Live green, respect and defend wildlife, and apprecitate the natural world.

Coho Canyon:

Coho Canyon is the only large parcel community in west marin. The proximity to the Bay Area has made the San Geronimo Valley a desirable place for unorthodox/alternative people who think ahead to want to start communities, however, county permit processes have been prohibitive for new purchases of land. Fortunately, all our permits are already grandfathered in.

Located at the end of a road in the San Geronimo Valley on the sunny sloped hills, deer trails zig-zag through 170 acres of forested hillside with creeks and waterfalls nearby, eventually taking you high up with views of the opposing grassland ridgetops. We are also located very near to hiking trails that connect with Mount Barnaby trail and the Point Reyes traillsystem. West Marin is also known as the birhtplace of the moutain bike and is famous for extensive mountain bike trails as well as bicycle tours through the winding country roads leading to Point Reyes.

Who we are:

A budding group of three die-hard idealistic individuals who consider ourselves lucky to be the current guardians of a semi-rural land parcel held by a longstanding, evolving community.

History:

We found a timecapsule from 1976...we know the guardians back to that year, when the Valley was a favorite hang-out of the likes of Kate Wolf, Janis Joplin, Jesse Colin Young, Elvin Bishop, David Grisman, and Jerry Garcia who eventually chose a place on our road to cross over to the hereafter Since 1990, Coho Canyon has been held as a TIC partnership in various incarnations, and in keeping with a long standing tradition, we are seeking out like minded folk to expand our small TIC partnership. As we evolve, we are tied together by a common thread in our 20 years of existence: live green, sustainably, respect the land and critters.

The Land and Forest that Surrounds Us:

- An organic garden with full sun and fruitbearing trees can feed many...

- Our forest is a pretty steep hill, and although deertrails zig-zag to.

- The ridgetop for access, it feels as if you go where no (wo)man has gone before!

- Our septic systems are healthy as we are mindful of what goes in them.. we compost as re-use as much as we can!

An Oasis for Like Minded Travelers:

Many world travelers of all ages have found a place to rest up here, find some local gainful employment, and share insights with each other and us. Activists regenerate after 'The Battle of Seattle', Exxon Valdez Oilspill clean-up efforts, Hurricane Katrina pet rescue, Sea Shepherd ocean campaigns, tree-sits and other direct actions in defense of Earth. Native American friends have found hospitality here regularly when passing through the Bay Area and we'd help them gain cash to take back to Big Mountain, AZ or Rosebut, ND. Folks who live communally elsewhere visit here, as we visit their communities. We hope there will be more of this as we link to other similar endeavours in these changing times.

Art and Creativity:

- Musicians visiting is always a good reason to stop and make a 'time out of time' campfire circle.

- Much visual art has been created here by artists who would rent cottages from us, as this end of the road land bordering a few 100 acres of untouched land provides many beautiful views, space and inspiration.

Gatherings:

- On numerous occasions we'd donate our large house and land for sharing circles, ceremonies, Deep Ecology workshop (John Seed of Rainforest Action Network, and "Thinking Like a Mountain"), or interactive workshops using the "Work That Reconnects" as developed by our teacher Joanna Macy (.net) . About 25 people would camp out in the woods , on the sun porch, in the garden, and share campfires.

- Spirit Rock Vipassana Meditation Center is within walking distance and when they were still small, we helped host monks coming through to teach there. We have much respect for the Teacher Jack Kornfield, who is a treasure to have in our valley.

The Land as a Safe Haven:

- We like to think of Coho Canyon as a sanctuary for people who are connected to the San Francisco, Bay Area but don't want to live in the midst of city life.

- We breathe easy here and delight in our proximity to nature, take spontaneous walks down to the creek just fifty meters down the hill on a hot summer's day, or relish the negative ions pouring out from the waterfalls in winter, with the owls hooting, or perhaps the chirp of a chipmunk, or a family of quail, bats flitting about at sunset and all the rest of the abundant wildlife living here at Coho Canyon.
